Day of the Dead Altar
Day of the Dead ofrendas (altars, offerings) are made as a way of remembering and honoring deceased pets, friends, and family. Entire Mexican families put up traditional ofrendas that reflect a mixture of Catholicism and ancient pre-Hispanic cultural practices. The altars vary greatly depending on the village and/or regional traditions, but its components are usually the same: candles, photographs, personal belongings, food, skull figurines, flowers, incense, salt, water, grains, pan de muerto, and alcohol. Offering these elements is the opportunity to dialogue with the memories and life of the deceased.
